The Close Contact Saddle

 

If you need a good saddle for jumping, the close contact saddle may be the perfect saddle for you. These saddles are flat and thin. They have thinner latex-foam panels, rather than the thick wool-flocked panels used on other all-purpose saddles. They also have a flat-seated saddle tree, which provides more close contact with the horse.  While they may sometimes be used for dressage, they are especially well-suited for jumping. Also keep in mind that the close contact saddle is intended for a skilled, secure rider.

 

If you choose to purchase a close contact saddle, you may find that a used saddle may meet your needs. In fact, some riders actually feel that older Crosby close contact saddles are a better choice than their newer models. Not all saddles are created equal, so the actual choice to make would be more rider-specific. One thing to consider is that higher-end close contact saddles will hold their value much better than lower-end saddles.
